Founded in 2008, the student chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists at LSU was the first student chapter in the Society of Wetland Scientists. Our mission is to promote understanding, conservation, protection, restoration, science-based management and sustainability of wetlands. At LSU, the chapter brings together an interdisciplinary group of students interested in science, management and policy issues surrounding Louisiana’s unique wetland ecosystems. The club focuses on volunteer and educational events, and in addition to hosting guest speakers working with wetlands, also tries to go out and get muddy. In 2024, the chapter participated in oyster reef restoration with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana. The group also volunteered with Glass Half Full to bag sand made from recycled glass to be put on the coast and conducted a canoe trip to Bayou Cane in Lacombe with Friends of the Louisiana Wildlife Refuges to learn about work done by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
