The Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters at LSU, also known as the Timber Tigers, had another active year. In March 2024, the Timber Tigers traveled to Gainesville, Florida, to compete in the Southern Forestry Conclave and won several awards, including pole climbing. In March 2025, they traveled to Huntsville, Alabama, to compete in Conclave hosted by Alabama A&M University.

The annual Christmas tree sale location moved from the back of the RNR building to the Parker Coliseum stock pens because of the renovation at the RNR building. It worked out well – easy access, good lighting and shelter from rain.

The AgCenter’s Botanic Gardens at Burden on Essen Lane celebrates Arbor Day every third Saturday in January, and the Timber Tigers participated by demonstrating knife and axe throwing and giving the public a chance to try their hand. Earlier, in November, the Timber Tigers served in a similar way at the Fullerton Sawmill Days near Pitkin, Louisiana.

All in all, the Timber Tigers had fun meeting a lot of people, from colleagues at other universities to members of the public who are interested in knowing more about forestry and natural resource management

The Society of American Foresters grows and harvests Christmas trees at the Lee Memorial Forest in Washington Parish. These are Carolina Sapphires, a variety of Arizona Cypress (Cupressus arizonica var. glabra) that has a pleasant aroma, is highly resistant to diseases and grows rapidly, maturing in approximately four years.
