Human structures are challenged by a variety of pests that can live inside the building, around it, or both. Many of these organisms are considered urban pests and require management. However, the damage they cause, behaviors, and potential impacts to humans as well as the structure enables further categorization. Urban pest organisms are separated into occasional invaders or nuisance pests, medical pests that sting, feed on blood feeders or transmit diseases, wood destroying organisms, as well as fabric and stored product pests which consume fabrics made from animal products and our food. Vertebrates such as rodents regularly invade and establish inside structures. Some insects can be placed in multiple categories, such as cockroaches which can transmit disease and are a general nuisance. These categories of urban pests contain arthropods from a variety of taxonomic orders, requiring homeowners and pest management professionals to identify conducive conditions and the pest itself so that the appropriate integrated pest management strategies can be implemented.
