Working with livestock helps young people develop skills, values, and a sense of responsibility that lasts a lifetime. This philosophy is at the core of the LSU AgCenter 4-H Livestock Program.
The Livestock Program is about helping young people be all they can be and rewarding them for the courage and commitment required to care for and show animals. This program provides a means for families to come together and participate in quality educational activities. It also gives young people the opportunity to make new friends. Through the Livestock Program 4-H members will develop character and hone skills that will benefit them, their family, and their community for a lifetime.
Raising livestock is a year-round activity, but for 4-H and FFA members, it culminates each year at the LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows. The Lafayette Parish Livestock Show and Acadiana District Livestock Show occur in January and the State Livestock Show takes place in February each year. It is at State that 4-H'ers from all across Louisiana compete in Gonzales for the chance to be State champions – or at least to earn recognition for their hard work and perseverance.
If you are new to the program and are interested in showing livestock, you are welcome to contact the office at 337-291-7090.
