All in all, our perennial plants and shrubs survived last years’ drought and the winter freezes. Fertilizer was applied to the roses in the Louisiana Super Plants (LSP) demonstration bed. The roses, previously pruned back in February, are currently in full bloom. There are two Belinda’s Dream roses in the bed, one on each side of the main Dean Lee Research and Extension Center sign. In front of each Belinda’s Dream, there are also 3 Drift Roses on each side of the sign – Peach on the left and Popcorn on the right. The remainder of the existing foundation plants also received a fertilizer application. After watering in the fertilizer applied to each plant, the warm season annuals were installed. Pre-plant fertilizer was added to the planting hole before each plant was placed. Warm season annuals installed in April 2024 include Serena Purple Angelonia, Intenz Classic Celosia, Senorita Rosalita Cleome, Butterfly White Pentas, Compact Rose Glow SunPatiens, and Zesty Purple Zinnias. Apart from the LSP bed, two ‘Blue My Mind’ Evolvulus were planted in containers closer to the buildings’ entrance.
