Winter Cookery Contest

Fall Cookery Contest & Kitchen Skills Workshop

4-H’ers do you enjoy helping prepare meals at home? If so, you need to get those cookbooks out and prepare your special recipes to enter in the commodity cookery contests on October 17. Check-In 5:15 p.m. Judging at 5:30 p.m.

Youth will participate in a fun Kitchen Skills Workshop while dishes are being judged next door!

Pre-registration is requested by 10/12/2023. Contest will be held in the 4-H Meeting Room (23) of the Courthouse. (Back of courthouse, by the parking area.)

1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be given for each division and category.

Enter only one dish per division.

Dishes cannot be split between divisions.

Contestants will display their dishes on table to be judged, along with recipe. Do not put your name on recipe. Remember: prepare whole recipe and bring only half of the dish to exhibit in the contest. Leave other half at home to enjoy with your family!

All final garnishes and entry placement for the dish should be done by contestant.

Dishes are prepared by 4-H’er the night before the cookery at home, chilled (40 Degrees F or Lower), and transported to the contest on ice, in a hard ice chest. ** 1st & 2nd Place in the Rice and Egg qualify for Regional Cookery in April.**

Rice Cookery **

Rules: Dish must contain 1 cup of cooked Brown or White rice. Rice should be the focal point of the dish. Traditional rice Krispie treats do not meet the contest requirements.

Egg Cookery**

Rules: Two categories 4-H’ers may enter: Egg Dessert or Egg Other. Dish must contain 4 Whole Eggs, 4 yolks, or 4 whites that makes one standard dish. No raw eggs in the final product.

Brownie Bash

Rules: Contestant will prepare and enter six brownies for judging. Think outside the box of just regular old brownies!

Tractor Supply Co. Paper Clovers

Tractor Supply stores in communities across the country have long supported 4-H clubs and now Tractor Supply has had an official partnership with the National 4-H Council as a source for 4-H project supplies.

The Paper clover drive will occur October 4-15, 2023. Please check out the clovers and help support the local 4-H Youth development programming efforts!

The Great Pumpkin Workshop

October 30th

Attention Club members - 4th-6th grades. This year we will be holding the Pumpkin Workshop on October 30 in the 4-H Office’s downstairs conference room #23 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN CLEANED-OUT PUMPKIN!!

At the workshop you will learn how to grow your own pumpkins, the nutritional value, create pumpkin snacks, and ice cream. Don’t forget Glow-in-the-Dark Slime! The highlight of the workshop will be “pumpkin carving”. You will be able to carve your own pumpkin to bring home and display for Halloween. You must bring a pumpkin that has been cleaned and is ready for carving. Return the registration form with $10.00 to the LSU AgCenter Office by October 16.

4-H Water Rocket Workshop

November 13, 2023

Science, Engineering and Technology Clubs or SET is a way for 4-H’ers to explore the mathematics and physics of the world around them and apply what you have been learning in math and science class in a fun and exciting way.

Members will need to supply three (3) empty 2-Liter Coke bottles (Old Style Mountain Dew Type) for the workshop.

Workshop is slated for Monday, November 13, 2023.We will begin at 9:00 a.m. and last tentatively till 2:00 p.m. at the Jena Fair Barn (Community Center). Act fast, this will be limited to the first 20 members in 4 - 6 grades.
Registration for the event is $15. Lunch will be provided. Deadline to register is November 1.

2024 State 4-H Fashion Camp

“Fashion & Beyond Tour”.... January 9 - Or - January 17

Get ready to explore the world of fashion in a fun and friendly atmosphere for 5th - 12th grade 4-H’ers.

Join the 4-H members of the State Fashion Board at one of their venues as they travel the state brining fashion to your fingertips. Stops on the Fashion Tour will include January 9 at the 4-H Mini Farm Building on LSU Campus and January 17 at the River of Life Church in Winnsboro. At both locations, activities begin at 10:00 am and end at 3:00 pm. Tickets for the Tour are $25 per person. Space in limited to 50 members at each venue. Participants will need to supply a sack lunch and one adult medium sided t-shirt.

At the fashion tour stop, you will get a closer look at all aspects of the fashion world from newspaper runways, color wheels, upcycling, fibers, basic sewing fundamentals and more through 10 multiple sessions and hands on activities.

Registration for the Fashion and Beyond Tour begins December 1, 2023 till January 5, 2024. The 4-H Office will begin your registration via your 4-H Online account. Parents will complete registration and mail registration fees (Check) to address listed upon completion.

4-H Shooting Sports Camp

December 8-10, 2023

Ready to hone your outdoor skills? Current 4-H Shooting Sports members 9-13 years old can attend the 4-H Shooting Sports Camp at Camp Grant Walker on December 8-10, 2023. Registration will occur through the 4H Online system.

Campers will select and participate in one of several different disciplines. (Archery, Shotgun, or .22 Rifle or Air Rifle/Air Pistol/ BB.)

Camp includes two nights lodging, five meals, snacks, drinks, targets, and t-shirt. Shooters provide their own ammo/arrows / bows and other protective equipment.
Registration fee is $120 per youth. Parents may also attend. Must be overnight chaperoned trained and pay registration. Registration and Payment Deadline is November 20. Payment options include online, check, or money order sent to state office.

Level 1 and Level 2 instructors will provide instruction and training for youth to hone their skills. Watch your 4H Online account
under your events tab to register.

Sweet Potato Fundraiser

LaSalle Parish 4-H members are selling 40 pound boxes of Louisiana Sweet Potatoes for $30 a box during the month of October.

Help a 4-H’er with their cost of 4-H Camp, Challenge Camp, LOST Camp, 4-H University, other camps, and competitions!
Proceeds from each box an individual sells helps them offset their registration fees.

Sales benefit 4-H members by offsetting the cost of buses, funding the purchases of 4-H supplies & educational materials, funding service projects, and more.

Orders and money must be turned in to the 4-H office by October 30, 2023. Find a 4-H member to place an order or stop by the 4-H office today. Potatoes will be available for pickup on November 9 between3:00-6:00 p.m.

Jr. Leader Pecan Fundraiser

Support your LaSalle Parish 4-H Jr. Leadership Members in their projects and activities. Now through October 23 members are selling 16oz bags of pecans. Orders will be available for pickup November 9 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Available selection includes Sugared Pecans $12, Chocolate Pecans $12, Roasted Pecans $12, Praline Crunch Topping Pecans $10, and Shelled Pecan Halves $12.

Monthly Photography Contest

Theme for October is “Fall/Halloween Décor”. It’s the perfect time of year to submit photos of your Fall/Halloween decorations. If you use someone else’s decorations, be sure to get their permission! Remember a few of thefundamentals of photography: Rule of thirds, lighting, and composition. Turn in only 1 picture each month.

Write name, grade, and club on the back of a 4X6 photo and turn in to your 4-H Agent BEFORE the Last Monday of the Month! Photos may also be attached & emailed to: scecil@agcenter.lsu.edu

Livestock News

2024 Market and Commercial Animal Validation

The 2024 LSU Market and Commercial Animal Validation is just around the corner. All show animals must be entered in your 4-H Online account before your respected Possession Date. Market and Commercial animals are required to be entered in your 4-H Online account, DNA collected , Ear Tagged before the possession / validation date. Any animals not validated by the validation deadline will not show at the Parish, District or State Livestock Show. Cost of validation is $7.00 per head.

Market: Sheep & Goats; Commercial: Heifers, Dairy, Ewe and Does; Breeding Animals: Beef, Sheep, Goat , Dairy, & Poultry

Validation / Possession Date: November 6, 2023

Miniature Cattle District Show Breeding Rabbit / Meat Pen

Any animal not validated or in possession by date stated will be ineligible to show at the 2024 LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows.

Registered Breeding Animal exhibitors will enter animal information into their 4-H Online account Before the Possession Deadline. Exhibitors will also Upload Registration Papers to the program. If papers are Pending, Contact the 4-H office for a “Registration Paper Pending Form.”

Market & Commercial Breeding Animal exhibitors will enter animal information on or before Validation/Possession Deadline into their 4-H Online account. Online animal enrollment is in ADDITION to submitting DNA samples and validation fees ($7) to the 4-H Office.

Poultry exhibitors will upload a side profile picture of their birds before Validation / Possession date in 4-H Online.

FFA Members Exhibiting at LSU Livestock Shows must create a 4-H Online account. Mark your school club as “FFA Chapter” and enter animals before possession deadlines.

*Exhibitors will not have access to enter animals in their online account after possession deadline.*

Broiler Entries--State Exhibits

Looking for a lower costing, fun and educational opportunity to experience a 4-H livestock project? Then the Broiler Project is for you! All 4-H members who want to show broilers at the State Livestock show need to contact the 4-H office.

Payment is due with order form! Minimum order of 25 chicks. 80 cents per chick. Make checks payable: LaSalle Parish 4-H.
Orders are due to the 4-H Office before November 13, 2023. Delivery Date (tentative) January 4, 2024.

Exhibitors are limited to show one pen of pullets and/or one pen of cockerels at state.An entry consist of three (3) broiler either three pullets or three cockerels.
Tentative Show Dates: - Check in February 13, 2024; Show on February 14, 2024.


National 4-H Week Display Contest

October 2 - 6, 2023

Show your community or school what 4-H means to you. School clubs may setup displays inside or outside to promote National 4-H Week. Email your 4-H displays, additional activities, and any descriptions of the events should be sent to Mr. Silas at
scecil@agcenter.lsu.edu . Pictures of displays should be sent the 4-H Office by October 24.

Other ideals to celebrate National 4-H Week include: Cookies for Teachers, Weeding School Flower Bed, or Setting up 4-H Display at school.

Shooting Sports Project Club

The LaSalle 4-H Shooting Sports Club is underway! Practices will be announced soon via email and Facebook page!

4-H Level I Shooting Sports Instructor Trainings for Adults

Want to get your parents, grandparents, aunts, or uncles involved in the shooting sports program? Do they like to work with youth to improve 4-H’ers skill in firearm or archery safety and knowledge? Below are the remainder of this year’s training offerings.

Interested adults, please contact the 4-H office for additional information. Online 4-H Volunteer Enrollment is Required. Shooting Sports instructors are background checked. Register for trainings through 4-H Online.
