My research interests center on insect/bacteria, insect/plant interactions, and agricultural pest control. My research program is a marriage between basic and applied research using integrated computational and experimental approaches. In my lab, we aim to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanisms of miRNAs in regulating insect/bacterial symbioses and insect/plant interactions; and the application of miRNAs (and their target genes and/or metabolites) for integrated pest management.

Survey on the underground pest outbreak:
In 2009, the underground beetles (e.g. Hloltrichia diomphalia (Batesa), Holotrichia parallela and Anomala corpulenta (Motschulsky)) outbroke in Henan Province, China. I, as one of the team members, investigated the species of the beetles, and their intensity and distribution, in turn provided crucial information and suggested effective control strategies for farmers.
Survey on the North China outbreak of Meadow moth:
In 2008, the meadow moth, Loxostege sticticalis (L.), outbroke in the North China. The outbreak even impacted the Beijing National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) for Olympic Games. As a master student, I carried out a survey in Inner Mongolia, which is north to Beijing, to help discovering the cause of the outbreak.

In 2006, as an undergraduate student, I got involved in a team testing the effects of four new pesticides on the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), for a local pesticide company in Changchun, Jilin Province, China
