Overview:
You don't want to miss this incredible 2-for-1 workshop! First, we will have a session on computer bookkeeping with renowned farm consultant, Ellen Polishuk. Then, we will have Dr. Achyut Adhikari of the LSU AgCenter Food Safety Lab walk us through appropriate washing, packing, and storing for various farm enterprises. We will also take a tour of the Hill Farm Teaching Facility on the LSU campus to see their brand new washing and packing facilities. Registration is free and open to the public. Ellen is a farm consultant and workshop leader. She leverages her 35 years of biological vegetable farming experience to help growers around the country to achieve more satisfaction and better profitability from their farm businesses. Her client work touches on all aspects of production, soil fertility, quality of life, as well as farm finances and bookkeeping. Ellen was one of three owners of Potomac Vegetable Farms in Northern Virginia where she grew Ecoganic produce for 7 farmers markets, a 550 member CSA and two roadside stands. Ellen is a co-author of the book, Start Your Farm. She lives in suburban Maryland with her husband, where she gardens like crazy.

Achyut Adhikari - acadhikari@agcenter.lsu.edu
Dr. Adhikari is an Associate Professor and Extension Food Safety specialist at the Louisiana State University AgCenter. He is involved in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive issue-based educational outreach programming related to food safety regulations. He works closely with producers, packers, and processors on issues related to the U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements. Dr. Adhikari is a certified lead trainer for the FSMA Preventative Controls of Human Foods, Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP), and Produce Safety Alliance Growers Training. He assists small and medium-sized producers and processors with Good Agricultural Practices, Good Handling Practices, HACCP, and food safety implementations through workshops and field visits. Dr. Adhikari also manages a research program in the areas of understanding the persistence of foodborne pathogens in food production environments and developing food safety interventions for pathogen risk reduction. His current research focuses on identifying and developing alternative practices to mitigate microbial food safety risks during pre and post-harvest operations. Dr. Adhikari’s microbial testing lab provides services to the Louisiana industry on environmental monitoring, microbial testing, shelf life, and challenge studies, and developing GMP and HACCP plan. Dr. Adhikari is an outgoing chair of the Multi-state project “S-1077 Food Safety Risk Analysis”. His international collaborations include universities and institutes in Poland, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, and Australia.
