ASI Makes Strong Impact at ISSCT Congress 2025

Group of people at the conference.Staff from the Audubon Sugar Institute participated in the XXIX International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ISSCT) Congress held in Cali, Colombia, from 24–28 August 2025. Angela Alarcon, Stephania Imbachi Ordonez, Giovanna Aita, and Gillian Eggleston represented ASI at the event, while Giovanna Aita and Stephania Imbachi Ordonez also attended the pre-congress tour to Cenicaña and several Colombian sugar factories.

ASI staff contributed numerous oral and poster presentations, showcasing advances in sugarcane processing, microbial control, co-products, and applications of near-infrared spectroscopy and machine learning.

Two significant recognitions highlighted ASI’s impact at the Congress:

  • Dr. Stephania Imbachi Ordonez received the Best Poster Award for the Factory Commission with “Novel methodology to quantify extraneous matter in shredded cane using near-infrared spectroscopy” (co-authored with Dr. Gillian Eggleston).
  • Dr. Giovanna Aita was appointed Chair of the Co-Products Commission Committee.

The wide range of presentations, posters, and recognitions emphasized ASI’s strong contribution to the global sugarcane research community.
