ASI Staff Present Research at ASSCT Joint Meeting in Florida; Award for Alexa Triplett

Alexa receiving award.Staff from the Audubon Sugar Institute actively participated in the 53rd Annual Joint Meeting of the Florida and Louisiana Divisions of the American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists (ASSCT), held in Charlotte Harbor, Florida, on June 24–26, 2025.

ASI was represented by Alexa Triplett, Ahmed Ibrahim, Young H. Moon, and Gillian Eggleston, who delivered presentations and posters highlighting advances in sugarcane processing and utilization.

Posters included:

  • Optimized Application of Dextranase at Low Doses and Retention Times to Break Down Dextran in Sugarcane Juice – Gillian Eggleston and Alexa Triplett
  • Updated and Operational Pilot Plant for Cane Processing at the Audubon Sugar Institute in Louisiana – Stuart Goudeau and Gillian Eggleston

Presentations included:

  • Factory Trials of a New and Stronger Amylase to Control Starch – Alexa Triplett, Lawrence B. Messina, Gillian Eggleston, Eldwin St. Cyr, David Stewart, and Belisario Montes
  • The Practical Advantages of Using Mini Nutsche Filters at the Factory – Olga Mow, Gillian Eggleston, and Belisario Montes
  • A Possible Use for Excess Sugarcane Bagasse in Louisiana: Manufacture of Sustainable Building Materials – Ahmed Said Ibrahim, Ragab Abouzeid, Qinglin Wu, and Gillian Eggleston
  • A Bagasse-Derived Nano-Biocide – Young Hwan Moon and Giovanna M. Aita

A highlight of the meeting was Alexa Triplett winning the Best Presentation Award for Manufacturing Session II for her work on starch control in sugar factories. Co-authors of this award-winning presentation included Lawrence Brennan, Eldwin St. Cyr, and Gillian Eggleston of ASI, as well as David Stewart and Belisario Montes of Alma Factory.

This recognition underscores the continuing impact of ASI’s research and collaboration with industry partners in advancing sugarcane processing technologies.
