Weed management should still be on the to-do list during the fall. A follow-up herbicide application around 60 days after planting can extend the control of summer weeds and can also provide residual control of winter grass and broadleaf weeds. Residual products to consider include Dual II Magnum/others, Command/others, Atrazine/others, Callisto/others, Diuron/others, Velpar/Velossa plus Diuron/others, or Metribuzin/others. These products can also be utilized in sugarcane harvested for seed and in sugarcane harvested early during grinding.
For fields with ryegrass problems, Dual II Magnum/others or Command/others should be considered. Research has shown that an over-the-top fall application of Command/others to newly planted HoCP 14-885 and L 01-299 had no effect on yield.
In early harvested sugarcane, newly planted sugarcane, or sugarcane harvested for seed, johnsongrass, itchgrass, and bermudagrass may reinfest fields prior to winter. Postemergence control options for johnsongrass and itchgrass include Asulox/Asulam at 3 qt/A or Envoke at 0.3 oz/A plus Asulox/Asulam at 2 qt/A plus nonionic surfactant at 0.25-0.5% v/v or crop oil concentrate at 1% v/v. Armezon at 1 oz/A plus Trycera at 45 oz/A plus methylated seed oil or crop oil concentrate at 1% v/v can suppress bermudagrass and reduce reinfestation in the spring.
Where a follow-up application is being made, selecting a herbicide with a different mode of action than the one previously applied should be considered to reduce risk of crop injury and development of herbicide-resistant weeds.
