In the spring of 2024, RNR alumni Mark Shirley and Dr. Greg Lutz worked to develop a report to the U.S. Department of Agriculture outlining the biological consequences of drought and excessive heat on crawfish populations throughout Louisiana. The report also included documentation on the extreme weather conditions the region experienced during most of 2023. These efforts ultimately allowed for the inclusion of Louisiana’s $300 million farmed crawfish industry in federal disaster programs. The number of private ponds in Louisiana continues to grow, as does the demand for pond management information. At the Extension Summit held in Alexandria in November, approximately 150 extension professionals from around the state received training in pond management. On the multistate front, RNR continues to impact aquaculture stakeholders beyond Louisiana’s borders. Webpages developed by Lutz for the USDA Agricultural Marketing Resource Center had 117,302 visits in 2024, with topics ranging from alligator production to recirculating aquaculture systems.
