Drs. Mike Kaller, of RNR, and Kristin Stair, of Agricultural and Extension Education and Evaluation, will resume offering a one-week field course in Nicaragua during spring break 2025. Previously, the faculty led courses in Nicaragua in 2018 and Costa Rica in 2019, but the courses were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and challenges in putting the programs back into place. Eleven undergraduates and two graduate students will share three days of natural resource experiences, two days of production agriculture experiences and a day of cultural immersion and service. Highlights of the trips include exposure to the unique fisheries of Lake Nicaragua, birding and wildlife observation in cloud forests and study of isolated fishes in volcanic calderas. Students also will learn about agricultural practices for coffee, cacao and plantains that are more integrated with wildlife and wetland conservation.
