How is Your Pantry Looking?

It’s no secret that having an organized, well-stocked pantry makes mealtimes easier. It can also help save time, money, and make menu planning simpler. Keeping your pantry organized can also help with food safety since you will be better able to use items before they expire.

If you are ready to tackle pantry organization, these tips may help you get your pantry in tip-top shape so meal prep can be easier and quicker. Who doesn’t love that any time of the year? Try these tips and tricks to get started:

  • Use the first in/first out method known as FIFO. After grocery shopping, place new items purchased behind those you already have in your pantry. This helps you use older items first, so you use those that are closer to their expiration date sooner. For example, if you already had a can of corn in your pantry but purchased another one, put the newly purchased one behind the one you already had in stock. When you go to grab the can of corn for your recipe, you will easily grab the older one first.
  • While it can look nice to transfer items to cute canisters, it is better to keep items in their original packaging. That packaging has lots of important information like name, expiration date, nutritional information, and instructions. This information can be important in the event of a food recall or for someone else cooking in your kitchen. If you choose to take items out of their original packaging, make sure your containers are well labeled so there is no confusion about what is in the container.
  • Once packages are open, make sure they are resealed before returning to the pantry. You can place the package inside a plastic storage bag or a container to help keep it fresh and free of pests or other hazardous materials.
  • Food items should be stored at least 6 inches above ground level for food safety. This helps keep food away from dust, pests, and other contaminants.
  • Chemicals and cleaning items should be stored away from food. Ideally, they should be stored in a separate cabinet or location. You never want to store these items above food where they could leak or drip onto food items.
  • When it comes time for menu planning, shop your pantry first when making your grocery list. Basing your meal plan on things you already have in your pantry will help save money and ensure you use food before it must be tossed. Throwing food away is like throwing money in the trash.
