Strategic Goal Focus: Collect and analyze data to identify opportunities and strategies for market growth, ultimately strengthening food and fiber production capacity.LSU AgCenter economist Michael Deliberto has helped agricultural producers navigate market trends, policy changes and other economic forces. Through spreadsheets, reports, newsletters, workshops and other avenues, Deliberto is a resource for farmers as they face decisions that affect their bottom lines. The changing nature of federal agricultural policy also plays a key part in Deliberto’s research. When any legislative proposals that could potentially impact agriculture arise, Deliberto’s work with industry groups helps evaluate the efficacy of that proposed legislation’s effect on risk management programs at the farm level.
With the unpredictability of the farm economy, every year agricultural producers must carefully consider several factors when deciding what to plant and in what quantities to apply fertilizer, chemicals, irrigation and other inputs. Deliberto’s tools help Louisiana producers make the best possible plans, allowing growers to analyze how changes in prices, yield and input cost impact profitability.
“Ag economics is really the practical side of the application of finance, budgeting, accounting, management, decision-making, risk, uncertainty,” Deliberto said.
By helping Louisiana farmers make informed, economically sound decisions, Deliberto strengthens the state’s agricultural output, contributing to a more stable and abundant supply of food and fiber that supports not only local communities but also global markets.
